Where/when do I use this?

You need a beveled straightedge when trimming off the excess soil from the top of the proctor mold.  For sake of consistency, make sure it is stiff and flat so each sample is the correct volume.  Ours is made of Tool Steel and verified to be within the flatness tolerance.
