Why a Rubber Tipped Pestle? Can I just use a ceramic pestle?

Our Rubber Tipped Pestle is used to break down the soil, but not destroy the integrity of the particles. A Ceramic Pestle can grind up sand particles and reduce the material to what appears to be silt.
